3 things to reduce chocolate binges this Easter

Always feel out of control when it comes to Easter chocolates?

Somehow, big companies like Cadbury have tricked us all into buying excessive amounts of their delicious, bunny/egg shaped, dazzlingly wrapped chocolate… on what is meant to be a religious celebration. Supermarkets start stocking their shelves with Easter-themed cocoa galore straight after Valentine’s Day (sometimes earlier these days!) so your pantry is well prepared months ahead. No wonder people eat copious amounts of chocolate over the Easter weekend – it’s almost like we have been conditioned to. And yes, even as dietitians, we have had our fair share of eating more chocolate than we normally do around this time.

But it doesn’t have to always be like this.

Below are 3 things you can remind yourself to help manage one of the year’s biggest binge eating triggers:

  1. Chocolate is available all. year. round. It might not be shaped like a bunny or an egg, or come in extra pretty wrapping. But the taste – that is something you can have access to whenever you want.

  2. It is healthier to enjoy the chocolate when you feel like it, rather than stressing about it and restricting it all day, ‘caving in’ when no one is around and then overeating it.

  3. You can always save the leftovers and enjoy them tomorrow, and the next day, and the day after that. If you want more, that’s okay, but if not, remember you can always enjoy it later
